About this section
Can you believe we are in September now? Not long now till you’ll be wanting to wear your finished infinity scarf. In this section, we return to the cosy 2×2 rib stitch for an easy, relaxing knit. It’s a classic in many a scarf for a reason!
Note that this rib section is not the same as Section 2 (although it will look the same in the scarf). This is to do with creating a smooth transition between this section and the stitches in the previous/following sections.
After initially increasing to the required number of stitches, this pattern is created by working the same simple stitch pattern on both right and wrong side rows, making it an easy and pleasurable knit. When finished, the front and back of this section look the same, making this section of your infinity scarf entirely reversible.
Important Note!
Before you start this section, you have a decision to make. Section 9 will be another panel of the same textured stitch you worked in Section 5. If you don’t want to work another section of that stitch (no judgment here, I find it hard going myself!) then I offer you an alternative, but it requires a change at this point. Instead of the textured stitch in Section 9, you can work another section of the broken ridge stitch, as in Section 3. If this is what you want to do, do not work the pattern below (which is over 66sts and ends on a WS row), but instead work Section 2 again (which is over 64sts and ends on a RS row). Following that, you can then work Section 3 again.
I will offer other alternatives for Section 9 that don’t require change at this point, so if you go ahead with this section you can still change your mind about working Section 9 later!
The pattern
For stitch information and abbreviations, please see the Sampler Infinity Scarf Pattern – Introduction.
Continue with your 5mm needles, but switch to your contrast colour.
Row 1 [RS] – increasing row: k1, repeat [k1, kfb, k2, kfb] eight times (four stitches remain), k1, kfb, k2 — 62sts.
Row 2 [WS] – increasing row: sl1 knitwise, k2, p2,
kfb, p2, repeat [k2, p2] three times,
kfb, p2, repeat [k2,p2] four times,
kfb, p2, repeat [k2, p2] three times (eight stitches remain),
kfb, p2, k2, p2, k1 — 66sts.
Row 3: sl1 knitwise, repeat [k2, p2] to last st, k1.
Rows 4-37: repeat Row 3.
Refer to the previous section of stocking stitch to know whether you are working a right or wrong side row.
Now is a good time to insert a lifeline before we embark on the decreases and the trickier stitch in Section 9. This means you will be able to unpick back to this point without difficulty if necessary. You can find many tutorials on lifelines online, but I found this one particularly clear and helpful: Elizabeth Smith Knits: Lifelines in Knitting. Make sure you make a note that if you unravel to this lifeline, the next row to knit is Row 38 of the 2×2 rib.
Row 38 [WS] – decreasing row: sl1 knitwise, k2, p2,
k2tog, p2, repeat [k2, p2] three times,
k2tog, p2, repeat [k2, p2] four times,
k2tog, p2, repeat [k2, p2] three times (nine stitches remain),
k2tog, p2, k2, p2, k1 — 62sts.
This section should finish approximately 16cm long and 23-25cm (9-10inches) wide.
Variations
This rib stitch section of the scarf is an easy one to extend. If you altered the length of Section 2, you should do the same to this section, to ensure a balanced look in your scarf.
Just work more or fewer repeats of Row 3 before you start the final, decreasing row. Ensure you only add or remove an even number of rows, so that you end your repeats with a right-side row, ready to begin the decreasing row on the wrong side.
If you want to continue ribbing instead of working the Textured Stitch in Section 9, stop before Row 38 and see Variations in Section 9.
Section 8 complete!
