Stocking Stitch with Break in Main Colour

Well, the weather in the UK has turned autumnal with a vengeance this week, with more than a few of the ‘little raindrops’ represented by this week’s stitch! I can’t wait to start wearing my new scarf and we’re not far from the end now – this is the last-but-one section of knitting.

About this section

This is another length of the pretty-but-tricky ‘little raindrops’ textured stitch that we previously worked in the contrast colour in Section 5.

If you can’t face another section of this stitch, I’ll provide you with some alternatives – please see Variations below.

The pattern

For stitch information and abbreviations, please see the Sampler Infinity Scarf Pattern – Introduction.

Before you start this section, check you have 62 sts on your needle, and you are ready to work a right side row.

Continue with your 5mm needles and switch back to your main colour.

Row 1 [RS] – decreasing row: k1, p2, k1, p3, k1,

p2, p2tog, k1, repeat [p3, k1] four times,

p2, p2tog, k1, repeat [p3, k1] four times,

p2, p2tog, k1, p3, k1, p2, k1 — 59sts.

Row 2 [WS]: sl1 knitwise, k2, repeat [p1, k3] to end.

Row 3:  sl1 knitwise, k1, repeat [p3, k1] to last 5 sts, p3, k2.

Row 4: sl1 knitwise, p1, repeat [k3, p1] to last st, k1.

Row 5: k1, p2, repeat [k1, p3] to last 4 sts, k1, p2, k1.

Rows 6-43: repeat Rows 2-5, ending on a repeat of Row 3.

If you’re at all anxious that you might lose count of your rows, or make a mistake, I would recommend that you insert a ‘lifeline’ several times during this section so you don’t have to unravel too far if you get lost. This is a really good detailed tutorial on inserting a lifeline in your knitting. Make sure you make a note explicitly telling yourself which row the lifeline is, or which row comes next. The tip in the above tutorial about always inserting a lifeline at the end of a section of repeated rows is also a good backup method – in this section, that would be in any repeat of Row 5.

Row 44 [WS] – decreasing row: sl1 knitwise, p1, repeat [k1, k2tog, p1] to last st, k1 — 45sts.

Row table

You can draw yourself the following table and cross off completed rows as you go:

Don’t forget Row 44 which is not shown in the above table!

This section should finish approximately 17cm long and 23-25cm (9-10inches) wide.

If you can’t wait for the next weekly instalment, the complete pattern is now available to download as a printer-friendly PDF! This premium version of the pattern is over 32 pages long, with row tables provided for every row in every section. Your download also includes a succinct version of the whole pattern which prints on a single sheet of paper, for those who don’t need all the detail and for ease of use when travelling!

Variations

If you would like to vary the length of this ‘little raindrops’ textured stitch, work a multiple of four rows more or less. In other words add or omit 4, 8 or 12 rows (whole columns in the above row table).

If you would like to avoid working this section altogether, you have the following alternatives:

Repeat Section 3 instead

This option is only possible if you made the change indicated at the beginning of Section 8 and worked Section 2 rather than Section 8.

Now continue from Section 2 to Section 3 as previously. Work an additional 4 rows of Section 3, making a total of 43 rows. Next, work Row 1 of Section 4 to decrease the number of stitches, then you will skip Row 1 of Section 10.

Continue with 2×2 Rib but change colour

Do not decrease in Row 38 of Section 8, but work another repeat of Row 3. Change to your main colour and work another 37 rows of 2×2 rib, followed by the decreasing Row 38.

Extend Section 10

You can omit Section 9 altogether and jump straight from Section 8 to an extended Section 10.

To do this, with 62 sts on your needle at the end of Section 8, decrease as follows:

Transitional Row 1 [RS] – decreasing: repeat [k2tog, k2] to end — 47sts.

Transitional Row 2 [WS] – decreasing: sl1 knitwise, k1, p2tog,  to last 4 sts, p2tog, k2 — 45sts.

You will then continue from Row 3 of Section 10 (next week), but work a total of 64 rows instead of 20. Add purl ridges in Rows 14, 34 and 54 (not Row 10). The purl ridges will be offset in the section, but evenly spaced – it’s not perfect, but this is necessary because we can’t change the Section 1 at this point. Alternatively, add a purl ridge only in Row 10, and then add any of the details described in Section 7 – contrast colour stripes, etc. – after the scarf is seamed.

Section 9 complete!

We’re getting very close to the end now – I’m sure you’ve been trying on your scarf and I hope you’re loving it! Share your progress in the comments below. How do you get on with the ‘little raindrops’ stitch family?
