About this section
The second section of our infinity scarf is a classic 2×2 rib stitch, and it’s the first section we are working in the contrast colour.
After initially increasing to the required number of stitches, this pattern is created by working the same simple stitch pattern on both right and wrong side rows, making it an easy and meditative knit. When finished, the front and back of the rib stitch are identical, so this section of your infinity scarf is entirely reversible.
The pattern
For stitch information and abbreviations, please see the Sampler Infinity Scarf Pattern – Introduction.
Before you start this section, if you are a beginner or at all concerned things might go wrong with your increases, this is a good point to insert a ‘lifeline’ in your work. This means you will be able to unpick back to this point without difficulty to give things another try. You can find many tutorials on lifelines online, but I found this one particularly clear and helpful: How to Use Lifelines in Knitting.
If you were using stitch markers near the beginning and end of your rows in the last section, remove them as you start working this section.
Continue with your 5mm needles, but switch to your contrast colour.
Row 1 [RS] – increasing row: k1, repeat [k1, kfb, k2, kfb] eight times (four stitches remain), k1, kfb, k2 — 62sts.
Row 2 [WS] – increasing row: kfb, repeat [k2, p2] to last stitch, kfb — 64sts.
Row 3: k2, repeat [k2, p2] to last 2 sts, p2.
Rows 4-38: repeat Row 3.
Row 39 [RS] – decreasing: k2tog, repeat [k2, p2] to last 2 sts, p2tog — 62sts.
You can always refer to the stocking stitch in Section 1 to know whether you are working a right or wrong side row.
This section should finish approximately 16cm long and 23-25cm (9-10inches) wide. A 2×2 rib will always tend to pull inwards, but the clever increasing and decreasing and the start and end of this section, should ensure it ends up around the same width as the rest of the scarf. Blocking your project at the end will also help with any unevenness and the tendency of some sections to curl at the edges.
Variations
This section is a great one to extend, but if you do make any alterations to the length of Section 2, I suggest you also do the same to Section 8 for a balanced look to the contrast sections of the scarf. So if you’d like your scarf to be 10cm longer overall, add 5cm to this Section and 5cm to Section 8.
To lengthen this section, work more repeats of Row 3 before you start the final, decreasing row. Ensure you only add an even number of rows, so that you end with a wrong side row, ready to begin the decreasing row on the right side.
To shorten this section, reduce the number of repeats of Row 3 by an even number. End the repeats with a wrong side row, ready to begin the decreasing row on the right side.
Make a note of what you have done so you can do the same in Section 8.
