About this section
We start to knit our infinity scarf pattern in the most straightforward way, with a short section of stocking stitch (known in the US as stockinette). This section is approximately half the length (top to bottom) of the other sections in the scarf pattern. This is because it will be married up with another half-length section at the other end of the scarf, when we seam the short ends of the scarf together to create the loop.

This section of stocking stitch includes a slight variation at the beginning and end of each row which help to keep the sides of the piece a little firmer.
It also includes a break in the pattern which forms a horizontal ridge of purl stitches on the ‘right’ side. In addition to adding to the design, this helps provide a little body to the stocking stitch which otherwise tends to be the floppiest section of the scarf.

Note that this stocking stitch section will be your reference as you knit the rest of the infinity scarf to know whether you are working a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ side row of the pattern. The stocking stitch sections are the only sections you might consider to have a wrong side, all the other stitch patterns are equally attractive on both sides, making this scarf very easy to wear without having to fuss with it. The reverse of the stocking stitch sections and the seam between Section 1 and Section 10 are easily hidden when you put the scarf on.
The pattern
For stitch information and abbreviations, please see the Sampler Infinity Scarf Pattern – Introduction.
With 5mm needles and your main colour yarn, cast on 45sts.
If you tend to cast on tightly, use a needle one size larger just for casting on.
Row 1 [RS]: k to end.
Row 2 [WS]: sl1 knitwise, k1, p to last 2, k2.
Row 3: sl1 knitwise, k to end.
Rows 4-11: repeat Row 2 and Row 3 alternately.
Row 12: sl1 knitwise, k to end.
Rows 13-20: repeat Row 3 and Row 2 alternately.
Stitch markers can be a helpful reminder to work border stitches differently to the rest of the row. Place one after the first two stitches, and one before the last two stitches on your needle if this helps. You don’t need anything fancy – I make my stitch markers from short scraps of yarn knotted into a loop.
Row table
You can draw yourself the following table and cross off completed rows as you go:

This section should finish approximately 7-8cm long and 23-25cm (9-10inches) wide. It’s difficult to measure because it will be curly, which is why I prefer to give you a row count rather than a measurement. You should only be concerned if your length and width are wildly different to the suggested size and you want your scarf to be close to the given finished measurements. If you are concerned, start again with different size needles to achieve the effect you want.
Note that I will shortly (hopefully by Week 3) be publishing this complete pattern as a printer-friendly PDF for those of you who would like to be able to download and print off the entire pattern.
Variations
If you already know that you want your finished scarf to be longer or shorter, this and Section 10 are the two sections that I would suggest you don’t try to extend/reduce. This is where we are hiding the seam, and you would need to reconsider the placement of the ‘break’. The stocking stitch is also the floppiest section and the least interesting!
If you do extend this section, you will have to plan how to extend Section 10 in a mirrored fashion too, so in general, I’d leave this section just as it is, and add/remove length in one or more of the other sections of the scarf.
For a straight scarf
If you want to knit a straight scarf, rather than an infinity scarf, then you should continue the above pattern for Section 1 for a total of 40 rows (approximately 16cm) as follows:
Row 21 [RS]: sl1 knitwise, k to end.
Row 22 [WS]: sl1 knitwise, k to end.
Rows 23-31: repeat Row 3 and Row 2 alternately.
Row 32 [WS]: sl1 knitwise, k to end.
Rows 33-40: repeat Row 3 and Row 2 alternately.
When you come to the other end of the scarf, you will omit Section 10 altogether and your scarf will look like this:

That’s it for the first section! Short but sweet this week.
