About this section

For the third section of our scarf we will be knitting a stitch usually known as broken ridge stitch, and we’re switching back to the main colour.

It feels weird to say it, but I think this is my favourite stitch pattern in this scarf – is it wrong to have favourites? I like how rhythmical the broken ridge stitch is to knit, and how an easy stitch pattern makes such an interesting texture, and I like both sides equally and the way they are so different.

The pattern

For stitch information and abbreviations, please see the Sampler Infinity Scarf Pattern – Introduction.

Before you start this section, make sure you have 62 sts on your needle and are ready to start a wrong side row.

You might like to insert a ‘lifeline’ in your work before going any further. This means you will be able to unpick back to this point if necessary, to give things another try.

Continue with your 5mm needles, but switch back to your main colour.

Row 1 [WS] – decreasing row: k4, k2tog, k to last 6 sts, k2tog, k4 — 60 sts.

Row 2: repeat [p1, k3] to end.

Row 3: repeat [p3, k1] to end.

Row 4: repeat [p1, k3] to end.

Row 5 [WS]: k.

Rows 6-39: repeat Rows 2-5, ending with a repeat of Row 3.

Row table

You can draw yourself the following table and cross off completed rows as you go:

This section should finish approximately 14cm long and 23-25cm (9-10inches) wide.

Variations

If you’re making a scarf in more than two colours, then you may want to make this section a different colour rather than returning to the main colour.

If you would like to make this section longer or shorter, you can add or remove groups of four rows, by repeating Rows 2-5 the number of times you prefer. In other words, add or remove 4, 8 or 12 rows. Always make sure you finish on a repeat of Row 3, which will put you the right place to start the next section.
