About this section

For this section of our infinity scarf we will be knitting an easy pattern of horizontal ridges.

This section is knit across the same number of stitches as Section 1, so the first row will decrease the stitch count back down to this number. More rows are needed in in this section than the other sections, because this stitch pattern has a shortening effect.

The right and wrong sides of this section look the same.

The pattern

For stitch information and abbreviations, please see the Sampler Infinity Scarf Pattern – Introduction.

Before you start this section, you might like to insert a ‘lifeline’ in your work. This means you will be able to unpick back to this point without difficulty to give things another try. You can find many tutorials on lifelines online, but here’s a good clear one with a video: How to Use Lifelines in Knitting.

You should have 60 sts on your needle and be ready to work a right side row.

Continue with your 5mm needles and your main colour.

Row 1 [RS] – decreasing row: repeat [p2tog, k2] to end — 45sts.

Row 2: k.

Row 3: p.

Row 4: k.

Row 5: k.

Row 6: sl1 purlwise, p to last st, k1.

Row 7: sl1 knitwise, k to end.

Rows 8-46: repeat rows 2-7, ending on a WS row.

Row table

You can draw yourself the following table and cross off completed rows as you go:

This section should finish approximately 14cm long (it will be stretchy) and around 23-25cm (9-10inches) wide.

Variations

Given its tendency to stretch in the direction of the length of the scarf more than the other sections, I wouldn’t recommend lengthening this section, to avoid unintended effects on the overall length of the scarf. Furthermore, the length of this section can only be altered in quite large jumps, so you would have to add a multiple of six rows at once.

However, this section is quite a good candidate if you want to shorten your scarf. Just remove as many repeats of Rows 2-7 as you need (six rows at a time) before continuing with the rest of the scarf.
