Following my decision to move away from the Whitecroft Bamboo crochet hooks I have been using for several years, I have been through many trials and tribulations trying to secure a reliable supply of sustainable crochet hooks for my kits.
The wooden Pony ‘Perfect’ crochet hooks I would really like to be able to offer are simply unavailable in the UK until the autumn. Many other brands of wooden and bamboo crochet hooks, including the Whitecroft hooks, are also not currently available.
I am still ruling out the very cheap bamboo hooks I could source via alibaba, etc, on the grounds of quality. Unfortunately, I also have to rule out several high quality ranges of hooks – by Addi and KnitPro for example – on the basis they are still packaged in plastic.
However, I have now finally managed to source some lovely bamboo crochet hooks, in cardboard packaging (hurrah!) by Pony. Pony really know their needles, hooks and pins so I’m really excited to be able to offer these top-quality hooks to my customers. I have enough to last at least a few months, so hopefully I can spend more time on the creative side of my business again, and less on these kinds of purchasing dilemmas!
Made entirely from sustainable Indian bamboo, Pony Bamboo crochet hooks are smooth and warm to the touch – if you’ve only ever used straight metal hooks before, you will find these a real pleasure to use. Their light weight and slight flexibility can really help reduce hand-strain.
These hooks are the inline type, as are the Whitecroft hooks, which can make it easier for beginners to form even stitches than using a tapered hook. They have a fairly blunt tip, which may be more to some people’s preference, depending on the yarn you are using – blunter-tipped hooks may make it less likely that you split your yarn. Overall, hooks are a very personal choice, and you may even find you change what you like to work with over time – I know I have – but I definitely think a lot of people are going to love these.
