Crocheted ornaments in the granny crochet style in red, green and white yarn

Granny Crochet Ornaments Pattern

Here are all the details of newest crochet pattern – which is really two crochet patterns in one – for these cute and versatile Granny Crochet Ornaments.

They have been a bit delayed due to my summer of spreadsheets, but they are here in good time to adorn your tree for the festive season!

I’m showing the ornaments here in a classic ‘Christmassy’ colour way of red, white and green, perfect for the winter. However, you can ring the changes with the colours to match your home and the seasons.

I wanted to create a design that really put crochet and its unique appearance to the fore, so I took my inspiration from that most classical crochet motif, the granny square. They are worked in a similar way to granny squares, so anyone who has made a granny square before can make these ornaments.

As always, I’ve tried to make my crochet pattern as clear and approachable as possible. The 23-page pattern is full of tips and explanations, as well as many clear photographs of every step. It includes a tutorial on the correct method of changing colours.

When photographing models for my crochet patterns I use specially-chosen yarn to make the stitches really distinct. You might not spot it at first, but here I’ve substituted pale grey for white because white yarn does not photograph well.

My patterns are repeatedly tested before publication, but if you find anything is unclear or you have any questions, I am always happy to help you. I like to think this is what sets me apart from the big pattern publishers!

You only need a small quantity of three colours of yarn to make the original design, and just like granny squares, they are an ideal way to use up the ends of yarn balls from other projects.

Of course you can make these granny crochet ornaments in any combination of colours you like, whether you are dressing a Christmas tree or a twig tree at Easter or for any other occasion. They also make cute little gift toppers.

Made in 4ply (fingering, Category 2) weight yarn with a 3mm (US size C-2 or D-3) crochet hook, the ornaments will be approximately 9cm (3.5 inches) across. Made with a 4mm crochet hook (US size G-6) in DK (light worsted, Category 3) weight yarn, the ornaments are approximately 10-11cm (4-4.5inches) across.
