We’re walking through the local market on our weekly trip to the library, and passing a fruit and veg stall.
“Um… It says they are pomelos.”
“What’s a pomelo?”
I had definitely seen that coming. I briefly toy with the “it’s one of those” answer and continuing on our way. Part of me is anticipating the usual ‘kids not in school today?’ comment from someone if we stop. But I do stop and we look at them. (more…)
I’ve been really struck this year by how a lot of people seem to be over and done with Christmas immediately after Boxing Day. Well, at Conker Corner, I try to keep the full twelve days of Christmas special – enjoying the beautiful tree, lots of telly, special food treats we don’t get the rest of the year. (more…)
We made our Twelfth Cake today!
I try to ensure we have a full twelve days of Christmas, and like to make Epiphany special, which also off-sets the taking down of the decorations. Part of that is that we have our Christmas cake on Twelfth Night, and one of us gets to be royal for the day. This is a tradition in much of Europe, and used to be in this country before the Victorians rearranged things. Hence we usually find ourselves making our Twelfth Cake a week after the rest of the nation makes their Christmas Cake. (more…)
