Making the Twelfth Cake 2015

We made our Twelfth Cake today!

I try to ensure we have a full twelve days of Christmas, and like to make Epiphany special, which also off-sets the taking down of the decorations. Part of that is that we have our Christmas cake on Twelfth Night, and one of us gets to be royal for the day. A Twelfth Cake is also known as a King Cake. This is a tradition in much of Europe, and used to be in this country before the Victorians rearranged things. Hence we usually find ourselves making our Twelfth Cake a week after the rest of the nation makes their Christmas Cake. I don’t enjoy baking, but it’s always a good feeling to know that it’s there on the shelf, awaiting us.

Cooking with Children
Picking the stalks out of the fruit – pet hate of mine; kiddies take it very seriously!

I also hate chopping the cherries – sticky!

I have a feeling my Kenwood may not make it to next Christmas…

Looks quite good this year. Nice and even.

Can’t afford brandy this year, so it’s getting the only thing left in the cupboard, which is rum.
